Empire is an artistic experiment. The main part of the interactive installation is formed by an ant- colony of the type of the grain collecting ant (messor spec.). The formicarium has three parts, two nests and an arena, sensors check the movements of the ants between these three areas. The ants’ activities operate the building of a virtual antheap. As building-material Tetris-stones are used, they can be moved and turned around by the ants. The installation “Empire” is a synthesis of a living system and the technical dispositif, whereby the interactivity takes place in a closed system. The “output” is virtual and is expressed in a graphical description of a biologically produced algorithm.

The building of an antheap in the meta level of the virtual space resembles the building of their temple – regarding it metaphorically. This temple is a symbol of their joint work and figures the collective intelligence of the ant-colony, which is organized by interactive, stimulus regulated majority decisions. One collective, one idea, one aim; living and acting in cooperation. The ant- colony acts as unit, grain is its capital, the virtual antheap being the symbol of its work. The accumulation shows the power of this “multitude”. [1]
In the book with the same title “Empire – the new world order” – by Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, we can read: “In the post-modern phase the accumulated social wealth is more and more immaterial; included are social circumstances, communication-coherences, networks of information and affects. Consequently also social work develops to be immaterial.”
The Tetris stones, the building material of their immaterial dream are allegorical for the visions and dreams of our society, that often end in the digital space as well. [2]

In this biotechnological starting situation a seemingly organic visual outcome emerges by the combination of geometrical modules and biological parameters.

[1] Contrary to the general saying, that ant colonies are seen as totalitarian systems, politically seen, their plurality should be regarded as dominant in this case, compared to synapses, that in their entirety form a functioning brain.
[2] The Tetris-stones are used in an antagonistic way in this work, when they are used to build a tower and not as usual when one tries not to build upwards.
