Die Kunst der Straße
Ist das Kunst, oder kann das weg? Graffiti und Street Art polarisieren. Schmiererei und Sachbeschädigung für die einen, Mehrwert oder sogar Kunst für die Stadt und ihre BewohnerInnen für die anderen. Als US-amerikanische Subkultur in den 1960ern entstanden, hat Graffiti heute weltweit den urbanen Raum erobert. Seit den 1980er-Jahren hat sich auch in Linz eine Szene entwickelt, die spätestens mit der Gründung des Mural Harbor salonfähig und für Tourismus und Wirtschaft attraktiv geworden ist. Von gesprühten Unterschriften, politischen Botschaften, Schablonen-Bildern, Stickern auf Mistkübeln bis hin zu farbenprächtig gemalten Großformaten ziehen sich Zeichen gegen das Establishment durch die Linzer Stadtlandschaft. Unautorisierte Kunst nimmt die Stadt ein und spielt einmal mehr mit der Frage, wem der öffentliche Raum gehört. Fremdbestimmung, Erlaubniskultur und Selbstermächtigung als Teil unserer gesellschaftlichen Struktur gewinnen in diesem Zusammenhang vor allem seit den pandemischen Ausmaßen von Covid-19 an verstärkter Bedeutung.
Die Ausstellung dokumentiert erstmals die Entwicklung von Graffiti und Street Art in Linz. Fotos, Berichte sowie zeitgenössische Kunstwerke belegen eine urbane Bewegung, die mit ihrer bildhaften Sprache das gesellschaftspolitische Klima an den Wänden unserer Stadt spiegelt.

The art of the street
Is this art, or can it go? Graffiti and street art polarise opinions. Mere scribblings and wilful damage to property to some, added value or even art for the city and its people to others. Emerging from the United States subculture of the nineteen-sixties, graffiti in the meantime has conquered urban spaces around the world. Since the eighties, a graffiti scene also has formed in Linz, which, at least since the founding of the Mural Harbor, has become socially acceptable and attractive both for tourists and the economy. From sprayed signatures, political messages, stencil images, stickers on waste bins, all the way to brightly coloured large formats, the signs against the establishment have come to be part of the urban landscape of Linz. Unauthorised art is taking over the city and once more is playfully asking the question whom public space actually belongs to. In this context, and especially since COVID-19 taking on pandemic dimensions, heteronomy, licensing culture and self-empowerment as part of our social structure have gained increasing importance.
The exhibition is the first to document the development of graffiti and street art in Linz. Photographs, newspaper reports and contemporary artworks speak about an urban movement that, with its pictorial language, on the walls of our city mirrors the overall socio-political climate.
