Der Woodpecker ist eine Maschine, die es mithilfe eines Touchscreens ermöglicht, ein gewünschtes Motiv oder einen Text in die Rinde eines Baumes zu fräsen. Der in unserer Gesellschaft vorherrschende Trend – frei nach dem Spruch „simplify your life with digital tools“ – wird hier ad absurdum geführt, wenn anstelle eines einfachen Taschenmessers der Baumtätowierer Verwendung findet. „Baumschnitzen 2.0“ oder anders gesagt: Die Technisierung des Herzerlschnitzens hält unserem zunehmend virtueller werdenden Alltag und dem gesellschaftlichen Drang, immer und überall zu kommunizieren bzw. Nachrichten zu hinterlassen, einen Zerrspiegel vor. Die Arbeit versteht sich auch als eine Kritik daran, dass immer weniger Menschen mit Taschenmesser unterwegs sind um, als Beweis ihrer Liebe oder Beleg ihrer Sehnsucht ihre Initialen in der Rinde eines Baumes zu ritzen. Abgesehen davon, dass die Bäume langsam knapp werden.
Woodpecker is a machine, which allows to carve texts or pictures into the bark of a tree using a touchscreen. “Simplify your life with digital tools”, taking this saying into consideration, being trendy these days, this tree-carver shows how absurd this saying can be, when used instead of a simple knife! Woodcarving 2.0 or, in other words, the technologization of the carving of hearts shows us our life in a distorting mirror, our everyday life turning more and more virtual and with the social urge to communicate at all times and everywhere or at least to leave messages. At the same time this work of art also criticizes, that fewer and fewer people carry and use pocket knives to carve hearts or initials into the bark of a tree to show their love or their longing. Not to mention the fact, that sooner or later there will be no trees left!
