Zimmerpflanzen und Haustiere, kultivierte Parkanlagen oder andere landschafts-architektonische Grünflächen — das ist Natur, wie sie uns täglich umgibt und gefällt.
Roland Maurmair untersucht in seiner Ausstellung Bio Deluxe im Bildraum 01 die auffällig ambivalente Beziehung unserer Gesellschaft zur Natur. Bio ist so en vogue wie noch nie und inzwischen auch wirtschaftlich hoch relevant. Googelt man etwa den Begriff Bio Deluxe, so erhält man aktuell über 82 Millionen Ergebnisse. Doch was hat Bio mit Luxus zu tun? Korreliert der anhaltende Bio-Boom mit gesteigertem ökologischem Bewusstsein? Was bewirkt diese Ästhetisierung von Natürlichem und was bewirkt sie in unserem Verhältnis zur Umwelt und unserem Verhalten? Diese Fragen leiten Roland Maurmair in seiner Studie des Bio Deluxe-Trends.
Neben grafischen Werken wird der Bildraum 01 in einen kleinen Garten mit Pflanzenaufzucht verwandelt. Inspiriert von Dürers großem Rasenstück, das — entgegen dem ersten Eindruck — kein Stück natürlicher Wiese zeigt, hat der Künstler für seine biologisch-skulpturale Arbeit Luxusgüter, wie z.B. eine Louis Vuitton-Tasche, erworben und zu einem Container für ruderale Wildnis verwandelt. Mit Hilfe von Tageslichtlampen sollen die monatelang vorgezüchteten Pflanzen im Bildraum 01 weiter gedeihen und sogar Früchte tragen, die am Ende der Ausstellung erntereif sein sollen. Maurmairs Kartoffelernte wird in Folge zur Produktion von luxuriösen Kartoffeldrucken verwendet. Für den Geruchssinn hat der Künstler ein besonderes Experiment gestartet — durch Destillation und Extraktion vereinen sich Rote Rüben und YSL zu einer neuen Duftnote.
In Form dieser multimedialen Rauminstallation ergründet der Künstler das Spannungsfeld zwischen Natur und ihrer kulturellen Überformung und lädt die BetrachterInnen ein zur diskursiven Erkundung mit allen Sinnen.
House plants and pets, cultivated parks or other landscaped green spaces, all these are nature surrounding and pleasing us day by day.
In image space 01 of his exhibition Bio Deluxe Roland Maurmair examines the strikingly ambivalent relationship our society maintains towards nature. Bio (organic) is in vogue as never before and in the meantime also has become a highly relevant economic factor. Googling the term “Bio Deluxe,” for instance, you currently will be supplied with 82 million results. Yet what does Bio have to do with luxury? Does the lasting bio boom correlate with an increasing ecologic awareness? What effect does the aestheticization of the natural have and which influence does it have on our relationship towards our environment and on our behaviour? By these questions Roland Maurmair is guided in his research into the Bio Deluxe boom.
Besides graphic works, the image space 01 installation also consists of a small garden including plant nursery. Inspired by Dürer’s great piece of turf, which, in contrast to the first impression, does not show part of a natural meadow, the artist for his biological-sculptural project has purchased luxury goods, such as a Louis Vuitton bag, and transformed them into a container for ruderal wilderness. With the help of daylight lamps the plants, cultivated for months in advance, shall continue to grow and even bear fruit, which are supposed to be ripe for harvesting at the close of the exhibition. Maurmair’s potato harvest subsequently is used for producing luxurious potato prints. For the sense of smell, meanwhile, the artist has initiated a special experiment. Through distillation and extraction, beetroot and YSL are combined to form a new scent.
By way of this multi-media installation the artist explores the tense relationship between nature and its cultural transformation and invites the observer to undertake a discursive voyage of discovery with all the senses.
